This applied not only in the first set and the tie-breaker, where their down-the-line and baseline winners became the biggest determinant, but also the net game earlier in the first set when they thrived at the cost of Colin/Justin’s failed volley. As a result, despite Colin/Justin having a 33% break point conversion rate, B. Lock/R. Statham had 10 opportunities to break despite only converting 20% of them.

On the other hand, B. Lock/R. Statham’s service games appeared more stable in general. Complemented by their 4 aces, they stood out from their first serves by 12% (with a 76% winning percentage), while they mostly went after Justin/Colin’s second serves, who risked 4 double faults that resulted in the fading second serves winning percentage to 48%, 8% below B. "Michelle" was a tune that I'd written in Chet Atkins' finger-pickin' style. There is a song he did called "Trambone" with a repetitive top line, and he played a bass line whilst playing a melody. This was an innovation for us; even though classical guitarists had played it, no rock "n" roll guitarists had played it. The first person we knew to use finger-pickin' technique was Chet Atkins, and Colin Manley, one of the guys in the Remo Four in Liverpool, who used to play it very well and we all used to stop and admire him. Later John learned how to do it folk-style from Donovan or Gypsy Dave, which he used on "Julia". I never learned it. But based on Atkins's "Trambone", I wanted to write something with a melody and a bass line on it, so I did.

Paul began the overdubbing process with a hyperactive bass part that transformed the song [Silly Love Songs] from a ballad into something closer to a funk/disco track. <…> …during the Beatles’ years, his bass lines were often full-fledged strands of counterpoint that bounced off the vocal melody and fit between the rhythm and lead guitar figures. In his solo work, though, his bass playing had been simpler and more direct, and on Wings recordings, the bass was often played by Denny… <…> “I wanted to have a melody on bass,” is how he explained it. <…> As Henderson recalled it, no one—even Paul—knew how the bass line would sound before he hit the record button. “I remember with that particular song, Paul walking out there and getting his bass sound set up,” Henderson said. “And literally within half a run-through, he had that bass part. He didn’t have that when he started playing, so it was amazing to see him come up with that, which is the signature riff of the whole song, out of thin air.”

The third game of the second set turned out to be a statement from B. Lock/R. Statham in pressure points, where they were able to produce winners as they faced several game points from Justin/Colin. A preceding forehand winner from B. Lock opened the gate before his backhand winner forced the deciding point, which meant the second seeds had a break point. The said break point was immediately converted at the cost of Justin’s insufficient response to R. Statham’s swift forehand return, hence B. Lock/R. Statham broke to 3-1 before consolidating their lead further to 4-1.

There were several moments where Justin/Colin had to save several break points out of the deciding points, including an unreturned serve to hold 5-2. It took two games later before B. Lock/R. Statham had the opportunity to serve for the second set, where they created their match point out of a working net exchange, finishing with a working volley from R. Statham’s part. An unreturned serve then converted the match point immediately despite a stiff opposition from Justin/Colin’s forehand side way earlier in the game, allowing the second seeds to take the second set 6-3, hence winning them the match and securing them the path to the semifinal.

Happy 2025! I hope you all have been celebrating or enjoying the holiday season.

That’s him on the Decca audition tapes and other early recordings. Deep Beatlemaniacs know that, in 1962, Best was replaced by Ringo Starr, which led to the classic line-up of the Fab Four. That episode is shrouded in urban legend, including rumors that Best was sacked because he was a bigger “chick magnet” than Paul McCartney. The true reason was more prosaic—Ringo had more experienced chops. It was an emotionally-wrenching career move for both Best and the other Beatles as they’d grown up together in Liverpool.

Best retired from drumming in the late 60s and became a civil servant. Then the 1995 Beatles ANTHOLOGY restored him to the public eye. At the behest of family, fans, and friends, Best formed a band and hit the road. In 2005 I was playing keyboards for The Davy Jones Band at a music festival in Newport, Rhode Island, and The Pete Best Band opened with a raw, rowdy rave up show, replicating the Beatles Cavern Club rock’n’roll set from the early 60s. It was a blast to watch! I lost my photo of Pete and I at the catering tent, but in this video I’m watching sidestage w/family members. HB Pete and God bless your rock’n’roll heart!
